VNA BOARD/GENERAL MEETING MINUTES
GREATER RICHMOND CONVENTION CENTER

8 AM, SEPTEMBER 14TH, 2008

President: John Koebert, 1st Vice President: Red Henry

2nd Vice President/Editor of "The Numismatist": Bill Eckberg

Treasurer: Darrell Tyler, Secretary: (Vacant),

Director: Clay Everhart, Director: Guy Clarke

Present at board meeting as current or prospective members of the board: John Koebert, George Cash, John Kolos, Jess Kilgore, Jim Owens and Dave Battan. Also present Bob Hart, and three other members came at appointed time for general meeting.

  • John began proceedings by stating that there were just 10 ballots returned by members and only one office was contested, that of treasurer. John Kolos won over Darrell Tyler, who has been stationed in Iraq since March, by a vote of 6-4. The new officers are: President – John Koebert, 1st Vice President – George Cash, 2nd Vice President and Editor of "The Numismatist"- Bill Eckberg, Treasurer – John Kolos, Secretary/Webmaster – Jess Kilgore, Director – Walter Bradford, Director – Jim Owens, Director – Dave Batten, Director – Emmett Yonce.
  • There was discussion led by George Cash and John Koebert concerning some controversy over the nominations for president. John was not planning on serving a fourth year, but is willing after a promising nomination was withdrawn by the nominated individual.
  • John Koebert explained that to deliver a treasury report was difficult as the previous treasurer is on duty in Iraq and the statements were not forwarded to John.
  • George Cash spoke concerning status of convention. He believes we may break even, though if we are in the red, the VNA can draw on it’s reserve deposits.
  • George said that there really needs to be VNA reps at each club. There should be better communication between the VNA and it’s member clubs. He had offered each club a free table at the convention, a few of which took advantage of this offer by providing materials about there clubs to lay out. The only club table staffed at the convention was the Richmond Coin Club table. George has recently visited the Covington Club and the Collinsville Club, which are very small clubs, recruiting both of them as members of VNA.
  • He thought there should be a "speaker bureau" where members can help recruit/coordinate speakers for the meetings of member clubs.
  • George thought there should be a youth director position appointed. John agreed and Bob Hart from the Tidewater Club was appointed and agreed to take on the role.
  • The new website Jess created in June, www.vnaonline.org , was discussed. There was concern about the old website developed through a free service still appearing in search engines. Extra effort will be made to have the former webmaster Darrell Tyler remove this site.
  • The next VNA convention was discussed. George said it would be here at the GRCC next September also and that he was willing to be Bourse Chairman once again. He had ambitious plans to possibly double the size of the convention next year, accommodating 250-300 tables. The ANA is expressing interest in having their secondary annual convention in Richmond come 2012. George went on to say that we are reaching toward making Virginia one of the most prominent states for holding conventions since the 1960s. Back then the VNA held extremely large events, produced 3 ANA presidents, at least 50 authors. The Washington Numismatic Association’s membership in the VNA has added directors of the U.S. Mint and Bureau of Printing & Engraving as members.
  • ANA Vice President Patti Finner came into meeting room to present George with a convention program signed by all the dealers.
  • The success of the program was discussed. It cost about $3000 to produce and brought in over $3500 in advertising revenue.
  • Jess spoke on the importance of communication with members and member clubs. That VNA reps for each club need to be established and their duties made clear to them. There should be bus trips established by each club to the convention and possibly other shows throughout year.
  • George thought that the VNA should sponsor a second event earlier in year, not just the convention.

Respectfully submitted,
